My name is Cristina…
I was born and raised in Orange County, California. My parents left Mexico in search of a better future for themselves and their children. They faced many struggles, discrimination, and adversity; sometimes working two jobs so that we could have the basic necessities.
My father was born in Cerro Pelón, Nayarit and immigrated to the USA in the 70’s. He first worked in the orange groves of Highland, California, but eventually found better work as a cook at a Mexican restaurant in Santa Ana (cooking was his passion until he passed).
My mother was born in Tepic, Nayarit and immigrated to the USA in the late 70’s. My mother worked as a factory worker and made extra money on the side from sewing. Sewing runs deep in her blood. Her mother was a seamstress, and she even created my mother’s wedding dress. This beautiful skill has been passed down to me and my sister.
Growing up in the 80’s and 90’s I felt that Hispanics and Latinos were portrayed in a negative light in history books and in the media. I want the younger generations to know that there were, and are, several Hispanics and Latinos who they can identify with, and that they have role models that have contributed to society in amazing ways.
This became one of my driving forces in creating my handmade collectibles. My handmade collectibles are based on individuals that have contributed in the arts and who are activists in our communities. My first project was for my cousin in Mexico. We both share a passion for Frida Kahlo. When I finished creating her a special keepsake I posted photos on social media. Shortly thereafter my family and friends started asking for their very own little Frida.
I owe everything that I am to my parents, and to the love of my life. Thank you to my husband for always encouraging me to follow my dreams and for your unconditional love and support. You were sent from heaven so that I would not travel life’s journey alone.
My favorite Frida Kahlo quote...
¿Pies, para qué los quiero si tengo alas para volar?
(Feet, why do I need you when I have wings to fly?)
